The theatre was built in 1896 and was declared a national monument in 1996. It was declared a cultural institution in 2005 by the Department of Arts and Culture.
Today Windybrow is a respected theatre where high quality artists are developed and where productions are inspired by Africa.
The Windybrow -
- offers excellent educational programmes for the development of performing arts skills
- they develop partnerships with other cultural institutions like the City of Johannesburg and Gauteng Province

- children’s theatre – for kids in the Hillbrow area – children’s production at the end of the year
