The Guild Theatre is a vibrant and dynamic playhouse, presenting performing arts, and they have been home to some of South Africa’s leading artists and performers, as well as international acts.
The Guild offers access to theatre experiences for all communities in the southern Eastern Cape and develops and nurtures talent and interest in the performing arts through their educational programmes.
They have professional dancers who specialise in dance forms and who have appeared on stage for many events such as National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
In partnership with the Transnet Foundation they are able to -
- take the performing arts to areas where theatre infrastructure isn’t available
- Transnet Theatre Trucks are converted into mobile performance stages
- they are fully equipped with audio and stage lighting
- the drop-down side of the truck creates a stage with electricity, sound and lighting
- able to cater for all performance events up to 5000 people
the theatre trucks are available for rental
The Guild Theatre is all about stimulating an interest in the performing arts in the areas of the Eastern Cape.

They have been operating for over 50 years entertaining people in Durban with their variety of activities. Over the years the hall has been used for dances, dinner gatherings, Scottish dance lessons etc.
The hall has a small stage and a wonderful atmosphere. Their first show in 2001 was a fundraising effort to bring about some improvements. After acquiring two piano’s for the stage and for pre-show music, air conditioning was also added in.
The Rhumbelow Theatre puts on a show every month which runs on the first weekend. The shows are varied and for a reasonable price, you can enjoy a fantastic evening of live entertainment.

The wooded park is a popular outdoor theatre venue. It was already in the 1950′s when Cecelia Sonnenberg and Rene Ahrenson, both actresses, decided that the little-used park in Wynberg would make a perfect open air theatre.
They had their first production in 1956 of “The Taming of the Shrew” which ran to packed houses.
The open-air theatre -
- offers a unique wooded 720-seater theatre setting
- famous local and internation actors have enriched the theatre
- they offer special educational shows – Shakespeare
- in 1975 they joined with CAPAB in joint management of Maynardville
The Maynardville Theatre, together with Artscape, presents classical theatre and dance.
